The annual Walk of Faith took place this year on Saturday 6 June. We were pleased to have the current Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth Cllr Tom Wilson and his wife Sonja. The photograph also shows Rev Don Jones vicar of St Nicolas Church, which we visited towards the end of our walk. Also in the picture are Zeb Ghumra and his guest. Representing the Sikh community was my neighbour Narinder Singh, who lives in Higham Lane. Dr Pat Bidmead is there as well as other Bahá'ís.
We started off by just moving over to the Tree of Peace planted by the Bahá'í Community 20 or so years ago. The introductory talk by John Neal outlined the overall vision that the Bahá'í teachings have concerning our view of other faiths and how we all share the same humanity and worship the same God.
The next venue was the Mosque just off Edward Street and Zeb gave us a quick tour before we set off for the Gurdwara where we gate crashed a wedding and were fed the delicious samosas and tea. Then along the backstreets and across the park to Abbey Road to the Hindu Samaj where Raj gave us a warm welcome and we asked the children to identify the Hindu Gods in the pictures on the walls. I have to say the Bahá'í children were putting the adults to shame with their knowledge.
It was then time to continue through the town centre and we came across the Ghurkhas who were in town thanking the people following their recent success to be allowed to stay in the country after their service in the army. We arrived at the Parish Church of St Nicolas and pat Beadmore showed us around since Rev Don Jones was soon to be busy with a wedding that afternoon.
We crossed the road and re-entered Riversley park to end up at eth Peace Avenue. This is a little known avenue of trees planted in 1995 by the then Mayor Don Jacques to commemorate the end of the second world war 50 years previously.
So the stalwart band finally made it for another year and demonstrated that the multifaith community of Nuneaton are quite willing to offer a warm welcome to anyone who wants to visit their places of worship.
The Bahá'í community of Nuneaton are so pleased to have this support since Bahá'u'lláh wrote that we should:
‘Consort with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship."
From Gleanings from the writing of Bahá'u'lláh
